In the business world (or in volunteering or other groups), you’ll often face a situation where you need a group of individuals who different backgrounds, training, work experience, lifestyles, and personalities to work together as a team. May You are faced with challenges that you are trying to draw people who do not “forced” or activities that do not have a solid team-oriented work style. If you’re dealing with a large group of people or only 3 to 4 people, you can find the time and an activity that will help people work better together. Getting people to work together as a cohesion, well-oiled machine should not be hard, long or costly.
First you ask why you think you need a teamwork exercise. Knowing what is not working will help you choose the right activity and the best way to address the situation. But if you work for a small business, non-profit organization or other group with limited funding and time, you’re more likely looking for an exercise that will take between one and three hours and costs little to nothing.
Next, determine that the exercise is good for your group. There is an overabundance of books and Web sites that have fantastic examples of team building. There are even companies that you can pay to establish and build a whole team-building program of exercises for you (do a web search for “team building” and you will find these companies). But if you’re like most organizations, the cost of doing business in a professional is too high. So take a walk to the library or do a little research online for team-building exercise ideas. Whether you’re looking for something as simple as a rendezvous know you game or an exercise that will help managers better understand the needs of other departments and teams, you’ll find a ton of suggestions online and in bookstores. The most important thing is to examine your answers to the first three stages make sure you choose the most appropriate. For example, if you need a team effort, because your group does not receive well, then you do not want to throw people in a teamwork exercise which require them to work together to solve a problem sitting around a table. You’d better choose an activity that requires less talk and more playful, like an obstacle course. If you are looking for an exercise for people who have never worked together, something which is at the same time their work while learning about each other is more appropriate.
Organize the year. Planning your team-building exercise is equally important to know why you should bother to do this exercise to begin. Waste time of the various participants do just that unifying the team much more difficult, so be sure to prepare properly. First, be sure to provide time for everyone (be sure to be on their agenda and to obtain their commitment to exercise).
